Johnson University Welcomes Coby Jones As Strength and Conditioning Director and Assistant Men's Basketball Coach

KNOXVILLE, Tn- Johnson University is proud to announce the addition of Coby Jones as the Strength and Conditioning Director and Assistant Men's Basketball Coach.

Those who have been around Johnson athletics within the past few years will immediately recognize Coby for his athletic success as a Royal. Coby Jones finished his career as the all-time leading scorer for the Royals this past season, and second all-time for rebounds. He was a member of four national tournament teams, including the 2021 NCCAA DII National Championship team.

In terms of individual success, Coby was a 1st team All-Mideast Region member and 1st team All-American in 2019, 2020, and 2021. In 2021 Coby was named Mideast Region Co-MVP, NCCAA Pistol Pete Maravich Award winner, Game Plan 4 LIFE Character Award (which is a single award given to one male athlete across all sports and both divisions of the NCCAA), and 2021 NCCAA National Tournament MVP.

Even with this incredible list of accomplishments on the court, his off-the-court experiences are just as impressive.

Coby recently finished a two-year internship with the University of Tennessee Athletic Strength and Conditioning department. While in this internship, he programmed and implemented strength programs for the golf, rowing, and women's basketball teams and he assisted with multiple other teams at Tennessee. Coby received his certification as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist in June of 2021 and is currently seeking his MBA here at Johnson. He is a 2021 graduate of Johnson where he received a degree in Sport and Fitness Leadership with a minor in Public Health. Coby is married to Hannah Jones who is a Johnson grad as well; Hannah works for Emerald Yyouth and they are active members of Woodlawn Christian Church.

When asked how he feels about his new position, Coby shared, "I am grateful and excited to serve the Johnson community that has given so much to me. It is my mission to maximize our student-athletes' athletic potential and reduce their risk of injury. I look forward to helping our young men and women develop mentally, spiritually, and holistically by instilling values like perseverance, sportsmanship, and teamwork that will help them excel both in competition and in life."

When asked about the addition of Coby, athletic director Brandon Perry shared, "The Strength and Conditioning position has been a dream of the athletic department's for some time. Athletics is physically and mentally demanding and one of our major concerns has been injuries. Coby's position is so vital because he will be helping us prevent injuries by giving our athletes resources to prepare their bodies for the physical demand of competition. Fewer injuries means fewer doctor visits and less class time missed. We also believe Coby's work will go a long way in our ability to compete on a higher level and will be a huge boost in the holistic development of student-athletes."
