Volleyball Falls on Road Trip at Johnson & Union

KNOXVILLE, TN - The Columbia College volleyball team fell 3-0 on the road at AAC foe Johnson University Friday evening via scores of 14-25, 19-25, and 20-25.

Johnson got out to a fast start taking the first set 25-14 on 12 kills while hitting .346 whereas the Koalas stuggled from the attack with 12 errors and 8 kills in the first set. CC played better in the second set hitting 8 kills with only 6 errors, but JU posted 14 kills. Columbia played well in the third falling by just 5 points, but just did not quite have the depth to keep up with the Royals.

Undermanned Columbia was led by sophomore setter Debra Shephard and her 20 assists and seven digs while senior OH Jada Gentry recorded 8 kills, seven digs and a block hitting .138. Freshman right side hitter Tamia Fripp also had a solid game with 7 kills, three digs, and a block.

Gracie Hicklin added 4 kills with 7 digs, 2 aces, and 2 assists as well. Freshman libero Katie Roberts registered 12 digs while senior middle Mikayla Stout had 3 kills and 2 blocks.

CC totaled 25 kills in the match with 44 digs and 5 blocks while the Lady Royals had 38 kills and 51 digs with 13 blocks.

The Koalas fall to 2-9 on the season and 1-4 in the conference while Johnson improves to 12-2 and 3-1 in conference.

UNION 3, COLUMBIA 0

BARBOURVILLE, KY - Columbia got right back on the court Saturday when they took on Union College (5-9), but went on to fall 3-0. Union won the first set 25-16 behind 13 kills hitting .357 while CC had 9 kills. The second and third sets saw the Bulldogs win by scores of 25-13 as they totaled 28 kills in the set while CC had 12 kills.

Columbia was led by five kills apiece from Gentry and Hicklin while Hicklin added 10 digs and 2 assists. Gentry had 3 digs and a block. Roberts also played well as the libero with a team-best 13 digs and a kill while Shephard had 12 assists and a kill.

Stout added four kills and two blocks in the middle while Fripp had four kills on the right side also.

Columbia will next continue their road swing with a game at Brenau University on Tuesday at 6:30 pm.
