Eagles top Royals 5-2 in women's tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - After having multiple matches called off, the Midway women's tennis team was finally able to take the court in a dual Tuesday, where it earned a 5-2 road win against Johnson (Tenn.).
Tanit Cevada-Cruz and Sofia Rueda helped lead the way, both earning doubles wins before winning in straight-sets in singles play.
Cevada-Cruz and Mara Guillen won 6-2 and the No. 1 doubles spot before Cevada-Cruz defeated Becky Clark 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.
Rueda and Nana Hishida gutted out a 7-6 win at No. 2 doubles before Rueda had an easier time at No. 4 singles, where she beat Paola Testa 6-1, 6-1.
Playing in the No. 1 singles spot, Guillen defeated Marina Lasneaux 6-4 in the opening set, then rebounded from a 6-0 loss in the second with a clinching 10-5 win in the third.
Haley Thompson went three sets at No. 6 as well, bouncing back from a 6-3 loss in the opener with 6-4, 10-5 wins against Isabella Stigall in the next two.
The Eagles will return to action in the spring. They have been the River States Conference runner-up to Oakland City each of the last two seasons.
