KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – It was not easy, but Union College women's soccer got the job done as it collected a 2-1 victory over host Johnson University (Tenn.) in Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play on Monday.
The win improves Union to 1-7-1 overall and 1-3-1 in conference play. Johnson falls to 3-9-1 overall and 1-8-1 in the AAC.
FIGHTING TO THE END
Scoreless at the half, the Royals drew first blood with a goal in the 57th minute. The Bulldogs responded moments later when Rita Pereira found the back of the net to make it 1-all in the 64th minute. Mariane Moschetta had the assist on the equalizer.
As time winded down, overtime seemed inevitable. However, Pereira made her second deposit of the day in the 88th minute to give Union the 2-1 victory. Dara Miguel picked up the assist on the game-winner.
SHAW'S STATEMENT
"It's fantastic for the girls to get their first win of the season," said interim head coach Jonathan Shaw. "They didn't make it easy as they came out a bit flat in the second half. But they fought back to win the game, which shows great character. I'm so happy for them that they got the win."
BULLDOG NOTES
- The two goals are the most Union has scored in a match this season.
- Pereira leads the Bulldogs with three goals on the year. Her other tally came against Columbia International University (S.C.) on Sept. 11.
- Moschetta and Miguel accounted for Union's first assists of the season.
