Union falls in doubleheader against Johnson

Barbourville, Ky. – The Union Commonwealth University softball team fell short in a home conference doubleheader against Johnson on Sunday.

Union fell 9-6 in the first game, while falling 15-2 in the second matchup. The Bulldogs wore pink jerseys in today's series to promote breast cancer awareness.

 

Game One:

In the bottom of the third inning, Union had two runners on base with two outs when Taylor Whisonant recorded an RBI double to left field that scored Leea Cole.

Kinsley Redmon reached first off an error on the next at bat, while Sarah Lowe and Whisonant scored. Union led 3-1 after three innings.

Johnson scored three runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead, but Union would tie the score in the bottom of the inning when Shelby Easton scored off an RBI ground out by Megan McGinley.

The Bulldogs entered the bottom of the seventh trailing 9-4. With two runners on base and no outs, Kinsley Redmon tallied an RBI single that scored Lowe. On the next at bat, Ryleigh Petrey registered an RBI single to left field that scored Kayla Keller.

Johnson prevented any additional runs as the Bulldogs fell 9-6 in seven innings. Leea Cole and Carly Cain each pitched in the matchup for Union. Kaley Harris, Easton, and Whisonant each tallied a team-leading two hits.

 

Game Two:

Johnson scored one run in the top of the first inning, but the Bulldogs responded in the bottom of the inning when Leea Cole scored off an RBI single by Ryleigh Petrey. The score was tied 1-1 after the first inning.

Union tallied two hits in the bottom of the third, but Johnson prevented the Bulldogs from scoring in the side. Johnson tallied seven runs in the top of the fourth inning. In the bottom of the inning, Keller scored off an RBI single by Redmon. Union trailed 8-2 after four innings.

Johnson would extend its lead, while preventing the Bulldogs from scoring as Union fell 15-2 in seven innings. Kerry Dixon, Jeweleyette Lilley, and Cain each pitched in the game for the Bulldogs.

 

The Bulldogs are now 8-12 (6-6 AAC) this season, while Johnson is 8-10 (7-3 AAC). Up next for Union is a home conference doubleheader against KCU on Monday, March 25, at 1:00 p.m.
