WAU Women’s Basketball Falls to Johnson University 97-61 in Second Game of Season

Knoxville, TN – The Washington Adventist University (WAU) women's basketball team faced a challenging matchup on Sunday, November 3, 2024, as they took on Johnson University in Knoxville, TN. Despite a strong effort, the Shock were unable to keep pace, ultimately falling 97-61 in their second game of the season.

 

Johnson University started the game with high energy, quickly building a lead that set the tone for the remainder of the contest. WAU responded with strong offensive plays from Isabela Lujan-Gonzales, who led the team in scoring, but the Royal's relentless pace and sharp shooting extended their lead by halftime, 52-22.

 

In the second half, WAU continued to fight, with Armani Ball and Deryani Colon Velez contributing valuable points and defensive stops. However, Johnson's deep roster and fast-paced offense continued to widen the gap. Despite WAU's efforts, Johnson closed out the game with a commanding 97-61 victory.

 

The Shock shot 32.5 percent (25-of-77) from the field, with six of its makes coming from long range. Lujan-Gonzales led the Shock in scoring for the second night in a row, finishing with 19 points, three steals, and four assists, while Ball followed with 17 points and six rebounds.

 

Colon-Velez (14), Tye Queen (4), Sanaa Morrow (4), and Melanie Aguilar (3) also found the scoring column. Eight Shock players saw time on the floor.

 

With this loss, WAU's record moves to 0-2. The Shock will aim to regroup and prepare for their next matchup against Trinity Washington on Thursday, November 7, as they continue their season with a commitment to progress and improvement.
