SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Visiting Johnson scored 10 of the first 12 points en route to a 70-50 win over host Spartanburg Methodist in women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.
The Royals (1-0) were led by the 20-point effort from Hannah Jones, who scored 14 of her 20 in the second half. She was joined I double figures by Emily Wilson and Jordan Heifner, who had 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Spartanburg Methodist College (1-3) was led by the 16-point effort from JaiDah Liebert. It is the second time in four games that Liebert has been in double digits for the Pioneers. Teammate Destiny Middleton added 10, who was also in double figures for a second time in the young season.
Despite the early deficit, the Pioneers were sparked by a 3-pointer by Najah Gilliam as the home team went on an 11-1 run to make it a one-point game, 24-23, when Liebert hit a 3 with 4:13 left in the opening half. The Royals countered with a 3-point shot of its own as they ended the half on a 9-3 spurt. Johnson scored the first 14 points of the second half to spoil comeback hopes for the host Pioneers.
Next after playing its first four games at home, the Pioneers will be on the road for its next three beginning with a rematch at St. Andrews (NC) on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in Laurinburg.
