Knoxville, TN- The Royals baseball team continued its strong start to the season with a three-game sweep of Defiance College, capping the series with a commanding 10-0 victory in Game 3. The Royals improved to 6-1 on the season behind an explosive offense and dominant pitching.
Game 1: Royals Surge to 13-5 Win
Johnson opened the series with a convincing 13-5 win, using a balanced offensive attack to overpower the Yellow Jackets. The Royals stole bases at will, hit for power, and capitalized on their scoring opportunities. Head Coach Dave Serrano was pleased with his team's approach at the plate, noting their ability to pressure the opposing defense.
"We played good offense all day," Serrano said. "Had chances to have an even better day but left some opportunities on base. When you collect hits, steal bases, and hit balls over the fence, it's going to be a good day."
Game 2: Freshmen Shine in Another 13-4 Victory
The Royals followed up their Game 1 performance with another offensive outburst, winning 13-4. The highlight of the game came from freshman Ben Thornberry, who smashed a home run for his first collegiate hit. Johnson also received key contributions from young arms, as freshmen Garrett, Bird, and Thomas combined to pitch the entire game.
"As a coach, what excites me is seeing many of the freshmen stepping up," Serrano added. "Luke Wilson continues to play exciting baseball, and seeing those young arms handle a full game is really encouraging for our future."
Game 3: Reynolds Fires a Gem in 10-0 Shutout
The Royals completed the sweep in dominant fashion, blanking Defiance 10-0 in seven innings. Colby Reynolds was electric on the mound, tossing five shutout innings with nine strikeouts while allowing just two hits. James Showalter and Seth Bougher combined to finish the game, ensuring Defiance never found an offensive rhythm.
Offensively, Johnson stayed hot. Tyler Rojas led the way, going 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Bryson Shown also drove in three runs, while Travis Hobbensiefken added two RBIs. The Royals showcased their speed once again, stealing six bases.
"It's pretty evident when you pitch like Colby did today, play good defense, and put together the offensive effort we did all weekend, you get good results," Serrano said. "We're pleased with our 6-1 start, but we know there are still areas we can improve. We'll use the next week of non-conference play to keep building."
With a perfect 3-0 weekend, Johnson will look to carry its momentum into the final stretch of non-conference action before entering AAC play.
