Lady Royals Make History with First-Ever NAIA National Tournament Berth
For the first time in program history, the Johnson University Lady Royals are heading to the NAIA Women's Basketball National Championship. The Lady Royals secured their tournament spot as the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Regular Season Co-Champions, finishing with an outstanding 24-5 overall record (19-3 AAC).
Under third-year head coach Bryan Lawhon, the Lady Royals put together a dominant season, winning 19 conference games and establishing themselves as one of the top teams in the AAC. Their success has earned them a No. 15 seed in the national tournament, where they will face No. 2 seed Freed-Hardeman in the first round.
Season Highlights & Key Performers
- Hannah Jones (16.0 PPG, 7.4 RPG) led the team in scoring and rebounding, dominating the paint on both ends.
- Jordan Heifner (13.7 PPG, 4.4 APG, 2.8 SPG) provided a steady scoring presence while also being one of the AAC's top defenders.
- Emily Wilson (11.6 PPG, 32.9% 3PT) was the team's best outside shooter, hitting 57 three-pointers on the season.
- Bekah Gardner (7.4 PPG, 36.6% 3PT) came up big off the bench, providing instant offense.
The Lady Royals were especially dominant on the defensive end, holding opponents to just 62.9 points per game while forcing nearly nine steals per contest.
Road to the NAIA Tournament
Johnson's strong season and AAC regular-season title secured them a spot in the national tournament as a No. 15 seed. They will take on No. 2 Freed-Hardeman on March 14 in Henderson, Tennessee.
Coach Bryan Lawhon reflected on the historic moment for the program:
