PIKEVILLE, KY – The Johnson University Lady Royals fought to a 1-1 draw against the University of Pikeville in a closely contested Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) match. Both teams now hold records of 2-1-2 and 3-1-1 respectively.
The Lady Royals struck first with a goal from forward Amy Johnson in the 20th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error from Pikeville. However, Pikeville quickly responded four minutes later when Sara Ritter found the net off a pass from Ruby D'Arcy, tying the match 1-1.
Despite a flurry of shots from Pikeville in the second half, Johnson's goalkeeper Kaitlyn Pope was a fortress, saving 12 of Pikeville's 13 shots on goal, keeping the Royals in the match. Pikeville's defense also held firm, with goalkeeper Millie Conod making one key save.
Yellow cards were issued late in the match to Johnson's Bennett Beeler and Allie Townsend, but neither team could find a breakthrough in the second half, leaving the score unchanged.
The Lady Royals will return to action Monday, September 15, as they host the Bruins of Carolina University.
