Barbourville, KY– The Lady Royals edged out a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Union Commonwealth in a tense AAC conference matchup. The game's only goal came late in the second half, propelling the Lady Royals to a 3-1-3 overall record and 2-1-1 in conference play.
With both teams struggling to find the back of the net throughout the match, Johnson finally broke through in the 88th minute. Lexi Hatch scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Annabel Reiche, to give the Lady Royals the game-winning lead.
Kaitlyn Pope was stellar in goal for Johnson, making 6 saves and recording a clean sheet. Union Commonwealth, despite several strong attempts, was unable to capitalize on their chances, with Johnson outshooting them 11-8.
A key moment came in the 65th minute when Union Commonwealth's Rosalinda Sanchez was shown a red card, leaving the Bulldogs down a player for the remainder of the match. Johnson took advantage of the extra space and eventually found the decisive goal.
The Lady Royals will look to build on this momentum in their upcoming conference match against St. Andrews on Saturday.
