Royals Pick Up Crucial Conference Win Vs. Point
The Royals women's tennis team picked up an important conference win with a tight 4-3 win against Point University.
The Royals big day started off with two tight doubles matches to decide the doubles point and early lead. At the top spot, Junior Lauren Murray paired with Sophomore Cait Bowling while Sophomore Paola Testa and Freshman Caroline Rhoton paired for the second spot. Murray and Bowling would fight hard after getting down early, but would eventually fall 6-3. Testa and Rhoton, however, would put the Royals ahead with a 6-3 victory of their own.
Singles would be tough for the Royals at the top two spots, but with a 3-2 lead, the Royals needed just one of the final two spots to bring home the victory. Bowling would put up a valiant fight on the 3 court but would eventually fall 6-4, 7-5. All eyes turned to the freshman Haley Thompson at the 4 court to see who would walk away with the match. Thompson would leave little in doubt as she would roll to a 6-2, 6-0 victory. The win gave the Royals another conference win and pushed them closer to qualifying for the conference tournament.
Coach Hale had this to say after the match, "We knew coming into this match that this was going to be an important one and we played like it. Throughout the whole year we have discussed the importance of doubles and team camaraderie. Even the courts that didn't come out on top, we fought hard enough that it took pressure off the courts that did end up victorious. Whenever you win 4-3, it is a whole team effort and today was no exception."
The Royals finish up conference action against Milligan and Truett McConnell before the Conference tournament.
