Royals Volleyball Embarks on International Mission and Competition Tour
In May 2024, the Royals volleyball team had the unique opportunity to travel abroad for a ten-day journey across Spain and Portugal. Through a partnership with Bring It On Promotions and Assistant Coach Meredith Bonee, the Royals toured Madrid (Spain), and Porto, Nazaré, and Lisbon (Portugal), engaging in both competitive and ministry-focused experiences.
While overseas, the team competed in five matches against European clubs, hosted youth volleyball clinics, visited local churches, and shared meals and fellowship with opposing teams. The trip also included Bible studies and opportunities for players to share their personal testimonies.
"It was amazing to learn about the differences between our culture and theirs," said senior Hannah Lukey. "Even though we do things a little differently, we all share a strong faith."
Head Coach Robin Vannoy reflected on the team's growth, both on and off the court.
"This trip really brought our team closer together," Vannoy said. "We built strong bonds not only with each other, but also with the teams we competed against. That connection carried over into our Fall 2024 season, where we finished fourth in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. We're already looking ahead to another trip in Spring 2025."
Following the team's success this past year, three Royals players have been selected to compete in international matches this summer in Greece: senior Hannah Lukey, junior Marissa McMahon, and freshman Luci Morris.
"Receiving an invitation to play volleyball in Greece is an exciting opportunity," said Morris. "It's nice to know that the hard work we put in is being recognized beyond our conference. I had the honor of playing in Italy during high school, and now I'm thrilled to represent Johnson and the USA in Greece."
