Royals Grab First Win Against MUW OWLS
KNOXVILLE, Tn- The Johnson University Tennis Team dominated in doubles and used quick starts in singles to roll to their first win of the fall season with a final score of 9-0.
The Royals doubles teams all jumped out to early leads and never looked back, sweeping all three courts by the score of 8-0. Junior Kaden Buchanan teamed up with freshmen Elijah Vento at the top spot, Senior Gerett Benjamin and Sophomore Camden Jones paired for the 2 position, and Sophomore Jacob Keeling and Freshman Tyler Parker finished off the sweep at spot 3.
Singles continued along the same path as the Royals quickly took the top three spots. Freshman Ignacio Gamarra picked up his first college win at the 1 spot while Sophomores Noah Brown and Jacob Keeling won at the 2 and 3 courts. The two tightest matches of the day involved a comeback in both sets from Senior Gerett Benjamin at the 4 spot and a strong win at 5 from Senior Cade Crowe.
Coach Hale was pleased with the first showing today. "We came out and really played well early and were able to control almost all of the courts early. Regardless of score, I think we stayed focused and finished the job. It was a good experience to get some of our freshmen in the win column early and our seniors really showed us how to fight with energy when things got tight on 4 and 5. Most importantly, I was excited to hear the support from the players and fans off court. I'm excited to keep working and build on this momentum."
The Royals are back in action when they travel to Ferrum College on September 23rd.
