Coach James Black has been coaching women’s college basketball for almost thirty years with experience in Junior Colleges, Division I, Division III and NAIA DII. Black began his career as an assistant coach under Coach Dave Kragel, Hall of Fame Jr. College Coaches in Tennessee and professor of computer science at Walters State Community College (TN), a nationally ranked powerhouse program. There he won the division title on five different occasions and took his team to the national tournament twice. Black coached at Roane State Community College (TN), before accepting an assistant position at Morehead State University(KY) in the late ‘90s, where he recruited the OVC Freshman of the Year.

Black spent seven years at Augustana College(IL) as Head Coach. In 2004, Black posted a .625 winning percentage at Augustana. Immediately prior to Reinhardt University, Black served as the assistant coach at Kennesaw State University from 2006 to 2011. At KSU, Black recruited two 2010 A-Sun Conference team members, the 2008 A-Sun Player of the Year, and 2008 A-Sun Defensive player of the Year. James Black has assisted in turning around the women’s basketball program at Reinhardt University for the last five years, making it to the national tournament for the second time in 2017. Black helped improve the Lady Eagles win percentage to 51.2%, and helped lead the Lady Eagles to the longest winning streak in ten years back in 2014. In 2013, the Lady Eagles won the AAC conference championship and made it to the second round of the National Championship tournament. Black was responsible for recruiting a 2017 Freshman All American Honorable mention and two players making 2016 All Defensive Team. As Head Coach of Columbia College (SC), Black improved results, posting the Koalas best record since joining the Appalachian Conference in 2020 and 2021.

As a player, James Black was a solid shooting guard standout in Blount County, making several trips to the state tournament. Black played at Roane State Community College before finishing his career at Lee College. James Black earned his B.S. in Business Administration and Master’s in Education from Tusculum College. Black is married to his wife, Carol. They have a daughter, Monique Black Walker , who resides with her husband Drew, and daughter-Ryan .
